From 2000 to 2004, activities were organized under the auspices of the Sexual Orientation Issues in Congregations and Community Initiative (SOICC). This Initiative was developed on the Los Angeles campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. In 2005, the SOICC format was expanded to become the Institute for Judaism, Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity.

we will discuss how Jewish Leaders can use language, build new Institutional structures and change power dynamics to make all
Jewish institutions safe for Queer Jews. By examining the history of Jewish Institutions by and for queer Jews and the effect
these groups have had on the wider Jewish world, we will chart the history of queer Jewish safe space and propose new directions
for future Jewish Leaders.
