News The One National Gay and Lesbian Archives Honors Lillian Faderman
The ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives houses the world's largest research library on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered heritage and concerns (www.onearchives.org). On October 13, 2007, they awarded Dr. Lillian Faderman with the 2007 ONE Culture Hero Award at a gala at the Barnsdall Art Gallery & Theater in Hollywood, California.
Dr. Lillian Faderman's work is of special importance to LGBT history and her work has deepened the LGBT community's understanding of its roots, its impact on society and its unique culture. She is an award winning author of several books, including the classic Surpassing the Love of Men, her history of lesbian experience in the 20th century, Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers and an acclaimed memoir, Naked in the Promised Land. Her latest book written with Stuart Timmons, Gay L.A.: A History of Sexual Outlaws, Power Politics, and Lipstick Lesbians, was published in 2006 by Basic Books.
Dr. Faderman has won numerous awards including four Lambda Literary Awards, two American Library Association Awards, and several "lifetime achievement" awards for lesbian/gay scholarship, including Yale University's James Brudner Award, the Monette/Horwitz Award, and the Publishing Triangle Bill Whitehead Award. Two of her books have been named New York Times Notable Books of the Year.
The IJSO invited Dr. Faderman to reflect on her identity as a Jew and a Lesbian.
